Numerous excellent, and some not so excellent, books have been written about the Me 262 and its effect on the outcome of World War Two. It is interesting to compare the various works, and to note that very few of them agree on any given detail. First flight dates, pilots names, and locations are often different in each book, not necessarily by days, but occasionally by months! I have attempted to sort out the confusion by checking data against what few official records still exist, but it is totally possible some data is incorrect. Contrary to most popular opinion, even fifty years later, I believe the consensus of researchers is that the airplane, and the decisions concerning it, did not have a material impact upon the outcome of the war. Less than 200 Me 262s were in operational service at any one time, despite the almost heroic efforts of Messerschmitt to manufacture over 1,400 of them within 18 months.
